Judges’ rotation: Islamabad Bar Association calls off strike upon govt’s assurance

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Bar Association (IBA) on Tuesday announced to call off protest strike for Tuesday and Friday against rotation of judges, ARY News reported.

The strike has been called off after a delegation of the government assured the protestors of fulfillment of their demands. Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Finance Minister Asad Umar, Law Minister Farogh Naseem, Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Minister for Petroleum Ghulam Sarwar Khan were also part of the government delegation.

The district and sessions court lawyers in the federal capital have been on strike since December 2018 over the issue of rotation of judges of the sessions court.

The lawyers would hold protest strike twice a week – on Tuesday and Friday.

The IBA said it would not back off from its stance on judges’ rotation.

The protesting lawyers had been demanding rotation i.e. transfer of the judges of the lower courts to the subordinate judiciary of four provincial high courts and posting of judges from these high courts to Islamabad on deputation.

While, the government had proposed that instead of posting judges to other provinces, they may be transferred to federal government departments and ministries in Islamabad.
