NAB receives plea bargain applications of Rs 120mn this year

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Lahore, received plea bargain applications of over Rs 120 million during the ongoing year, ARY News reported Wednesday.

According to details, one of the two applications in the plea bargain was submitted by former vice chancellor of University of Sargodha, Muhammad Akram Chaudhry, in illegal campus case. He forwarded the plea agreeing to return Rs 9.2 million in the case.

His two associates – Shafiq and Waris Nadeem – also agreed to return Rs 50.2 million and Rs 40.7 million, respectively. Nadeem assured of paying the amount in three installments with an assurance to submit first installment of Rs20.13 million, and the remaining two in equal installments.

In the Sargodha University case, the NAB received plea bargain for Rs 110 million in total.

While in MNM motorcycles case, the accountability watchdog received a plea from accused Muhammad Iqbal who submitted a request to return Rs 2.4 million

The NAB had released a report stating its annual performance report of 2018, reporting a near 100 per cent complaint redressal.

The report mentions that the NAB Karachi received 10,311 complaints over the year, out of which ‘more than 10,000 complaints’ were resolved.

NAB Karachi in 2018 filed 46 references in the accountability court in Karachi. In 33 cases, the prosecution succeeded in obtaining a conviction. The convicts, said the spokesperson, were sentenced to plea-bargain which resulted in the recovery of Rs. 518mn from the convicts.
