ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister and PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday challenged the returning officer’s decision of rejecting his nomination papers for NA-53 Islamabad.
Abbasi filed an election petition through his lawyer, requesting an appellate tribunal to set aside the decision.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) will likely take up his appeal today.
The RO had earlier rejected the nomination papers of PTI chief Imran Khan, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Ayesha Gulalai for NA-53 constituency.
According to the ECP, the nomination forms were turned down over violation of Section N of the affidavit, relating to development work a candidate undertook in their constituency.
The objection raised by the returning officer stated that the respective candidates failed to fill up affidavit according to the conditions mentioned in the form.
Meanwhile, today is the last day for filing of appeals against rejection or acceptance of nomination papers by returning officers for the National and provincial assemblies’ seats.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has already established 21 appellate tribunals to hear appeals.
According to the Commission, eight tribunals have been established in Punjab, four in Sindh, six in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, two in Balochistan and one in Islamabad.
The appellate tribunals will decide the appeals by 27th of this month, after which revised list of the candidates will be published the next day.
