Fazl fails to get PPP’s support for presidential elections

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam-e-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday met Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) top leadership and tried to pursue them to support him and withdraw their candidate for upcoming presidential elections in his favour, ARY News reported.

Senior PPP leader Farhatullah Babar told media after the meeting that PPP has clearly refused the suggestion put forward by the JUI-F chief and will only vote for Aitzaz Ahsan, party’s own presidential candidate.

As a reporter asked Babar if the media should consider that PPP has decided not to support Fazl, the PPP leader replied in affirmative.

He, however, added that PPP leadership will mull over suggestions put forward by the JUI-F delegation in a high-level party meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) so that party leaders can decide the matter with consensus.

Fazlur Rehman was jointly fielded by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), Awami National Party, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and National Party against PTI’s Arif Alvi.

Though a part of opposition alliance named “Alliance for Free and Fair Elections”, PPP named Aitzaz Ahsan as their candidate for presidential elections despite strong opposition by PML-N.

Fazl had earlier expressed hope that he will persuade the PPP to support him or nominate a joint candidate for the presidential polls who is acceptable for PML-N too as the former ruling party had expressed reservations on Aitzaz’s name.
