Funds withdrawn from Omni Group’s frozen bank accounts, SC told

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was informed on Friday that millions of rupees were withdrawn from the Omni Group’s bank accounts, which were supposed to be frozen on its directives.

This disclosure came in a report submitted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to the apex court in a fake bank accounts case.

The FIA informed that funds were transferred from the accounts, which were supposed to be frozen on the directives of the apex court. These accounts belong to six companies owned by the Omni Group.

It is pertinent to mention here that Anwar Majeed, a close aide of former president Asif Ali Zardari, owns the Group.

The FIA report said that the top court had issued directives for freezing 41 accounts operated by the companies, but a bank employee deliberately caused delay in freezing 10 of the 41 accounts due to which the transactions of millions of rupees took place.

The bank employee found guilty of dragging his feet to freeze the bank accounts has been put under suspension, the report added.

The FIA had taken Anwar Majeed and his son into custody on August 15 from outside the Supreme Court where he and his family appeared before the bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar in a suo motu case regarding money laundering of Rs 35 billion through fake accounts.

Subsequently, their names were also added to the Exit Control List (ECL) on the directives of the top court.

Anwar Majeed and his son Abdul Ghani Majeed are among the people being investigated for their alleged involvement in the money-laundering scam.

PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur and former Pakistan Stock Exchange chairman Hussain Lawai have also been named in the scam.
