ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Monday reaffirmed that the upcoming general elections will be held on time and that if someone cherishes a thought about delay in the polls should get it out of their mind.
“If anyone had the thought that elections could be delayed by two to three months should get it out of their mind,” chief justice said while hearing a petition of the Workers Party with regard to the electoral reforms.
He said election candidates could face hardships and demand delay in the polls to meet the conditions, if the old nomination forms are restored. He said he desired that the elections be held as per schedule.
The top judge further said the code of conduct for the general elections has been devised with a consensus, which could not be changed.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in its reply stated that after the Election Act 2017, the commission worked out a new code of conduct for the polls with consensus of all political parties.
The hearing of the case was adjourned till July 25, 2018.
A day earlier, the chief justice categorically stated that the polls will be held on July 25. “The ECP will be solely responsible if the elections are delayed,” he warned.
