The incident was reported at the Government College University Lahore when a Islamabad-based student Mehreen Shafaq appeared for an interview at the university where she said she was told that the management could not offer admission to students who wore a niqab.
The student said she was insisted by male panel to remove her hijab, however, “I was ready to take off face veil before the female interviewers.”
She was of the view that women should be allowed to practise religious freedom in the country. No one can stop a girl from wearing niqab in Islamic Republic of Pakistan, she added.
She criticised the administration of GCU University for framing policies which she said went against the principles of Islam.
Mehreen also filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against the university. The court subsequently issued notices to the High Education Commission and university administration. The hearing was adjourned till September 10.
