ISLAMABAD: Member of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Mian Shams has said that the Government has given a safe passage to Geo TV – ARY News reports.
Mian Shams said that today’s meeting of PEMRA authority is similar to make a fool out of the people. He inquired that what kind of decision and meeting were these, when there is no room for an acting Chairman in PEMRA.
Shams said that the Government indeed, provided a safe passage to Geo TV.
On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, Shireen Mazari has also expressed her astonishment over the decision of PEMRA on Geo TV issue.
Mazari urged the Government to clarify its position, whether it is standing by the army or Geo TV.
Yesterday, the Government had appointed Pervez Rathore as the acting PEMRA Chairman, while earlier today PEMRA suspended the licenses of Geo TV for 15 days and ordered it to pay a fine of Rs 10 million.
PEMRA has been criticized for opting to a considerably lenient attitude towards Geo TV, as the decision makes a perception that the cost of maligning key national security institution is merely a fine of 10 million rupees and suspension of license for only 15 days.
