Storing honey and olive oil is a straightforward process. Both products are long lasting if kept with care and taken necessary precautions.
To keep honey fresh, all you have to do is find an appropriate container in which to store the honey and to keep this container in a cool, dry place
Choose the RIGHT container
You can store honey in the container it originally came in. However, if your container is damaged or leaking, you can transfer your honey to another container in your kitchen. You can store honey in any of the following
Plastic containers
Glass jars
Mason jars
Avoiding Mishaps
Honey can last for years, and natural honey can theoretically last indefinitely. However, honey may start to crystallize after a while. You do not need to throw away crystalized honey. You can bring the honey back to its liquid state with boiling water.
First, bring a pot of water to a boil.
- Then, set your jar of honey into the pot.
- Keep the container tightly sealed.
- Turn off the heat on your stove.
- Leave the honey container alone until it’s cool.
- The honey should have returned to its liquid state.
Olive Oil
The best containers for storage are glass (especially tinted glass), ceramic, porcelain, or non-reactive metals such as stainless steel.
Olive oil will oxidize rapidly if it is not kept in a sealed container. If olive oil is stored in a bottle, always replace the cap on the bottle and keep it tightly sealed.
Never put olive oil in a container that does not have a tight cap or some other method of sealing the container.
Do not store olive oil in containers made of reactive metals such as copper or iron. Olive oil should not be stored in plastic containers because the oil may absorb PVC’s from the plastic.
Preferable olive oil containers
Glass bottles with nozzles allow you to pour olive oil safely without making a mess.
Olive glass jugs are a favorite among cooking professionals as they come with a seal and are easily usable.
Transparent containers are preferable as you are not likely to mix or confuse your ‘favorite’ ingredient with anything else.
