Herschelle Gibbs was ‘drunk before smashing 175 against Australia’ in epic chase

JOHANNESBURG: Herschelle Gibbs was one of the finest batsmen in the ODI cricket and his record knock of 175 in 2006 against Australia was the best highlight of his career, to say the least.

An ODI match was played on March 12, 2006 betweeen Australia and South Africa and certainly it had been one of the greatest ODI matches ever.

Gibbs slammed a brilliant 175 on that day as South Africa chased down a mammoth total of 434 against Australia in Johannesburg.

Herschelle Gibbs was the star batsman of his side as they became the first ever team to successfully chase a total above 400 in ODI history.

It was an impressive knock by the flamboyant batsman, but the thing that made it special was the fact that Herschelle Gibbs was suffering from a hangover after a night out before the match against Australia.

In his autobiography, Gibbs revealed that he had been drinking till 1 am with a friend and had a massive hangover by the time he came out to bat.

However, it did not prove to be a problem for him as Gibbs slammed 21 fours and 7 sixes to his career-best score in limited overs cricket.

South Africa’s chase of 434 remains the highest run chase by any team in history.
