According to sources, the federal government once again approached the former CJ, Tassaduq Hussain Jillani on Tuesday, offering him the slot of CEC, to which the latter humbly declined.
The apex court has directed the government to appoint the head of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by December 8, however it is to be seen as to who else is invited to take charge of this post, which has lately become quite controversial, in the wake of serious allegations leveled by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).
The 18th amendment of the Constitution suggests if the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader fail to appoint CEC mutually, then the matter will be forwarded to the concerned parliamentary committee.
This is the first instance in the history of Pakistan that the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition both are requesting former judges to take up the post, yet no one is ready to bear the responsibility.
