Joining Saudi-led military alliance a ‘unilateral’ govt decision: PTI

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) submitted a resolution today (Wednesday) in the National Assembly secretariat, expressing grave concern over the government’s decision to join Saudi-Arabia led 34-state Islamic military alliance, ARY News reported.

The PTI leadership has also called for a joint parliamentary sitting to discuss the issue.

The resolution stated that joining a military alliance and taking part in wars of others were not in the interest of the country keeping the consequences of past involvements in view.

The resolution further stipulated that it recognized unanimous parliamentary resolution on Yemen, passed on 10 April 2015, under Article 40 of the constitution, which says that the state shall endeavour to preserve and strengthen fraternal relations among Muslim countries on Islamic unity and encourage settlements of international disputes by peaceful means.

Moreover, it said that the decision was taken ‘unilaterally’ without consulting and discussing the issue in the parliament.

It is worth mentioning here that a unanimous resolution was passed in National Assembly on April 10, 2015 which agreed to remain neutral in Saudi-Yemen war by considering its possible implications for regional and international peace by noting that war in Yemen was not sectarian but have high potential of turning into a regional conflict.

The resolution said that it recognizes brotherly relations and historic ties of cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

However, the resolution not referred the former Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif’s recent appointment as the commander of Saudi-led military alliance.
