Judicial remand of Punjab University’s former VC extended till Nov 20

LAHORE: An accountability court on Monday extended judicial remand of former vice chancellor Punjab University, Mujahid Kamran, and six others till November 20 in the corruption case, ARY News reported.

The counsel of ex-VC of Punjab University told the court that his client was allowed to meet his lawyer just once a week, while other inmates have permission to meet their visitors more than once a week.

The court asked the lawyer to furnish a formal request in this regard and the court would subsequently look into it.

Five others accused in the case are Dr. Aurangzeb Alamgir, Dr Liaquat Ali, Dr Raas Masood, Dr Kamran and Ameen Azhar.

On Oct 11, the National Accountability Bureau had arrested Dr. Mujahid Kamran on charges of irregularities during his tenure as theVC.

The anti-graft watchdog apprehended Kamran after he appeared before the bureau’s Lahore office to record his statement.

The former PU VC is facing charges of carrying out massive irregularities during his tenure at the varsity. Among number of offences, Kamran is accused of granting approval for several hirings across the university in violation of the laws, in addition to this, he is also accused of being involved for the unlawful appointment of his wife Shazia Qureshi as the principal of Punjab University Law College.

Awarding scholarships to students on the basis of nepotism, as well as giving contracts to his “preferred” contractors in violation of the laws are the other allegations against the former vice chancellor.
