One dead, five injured in Karachi grenade attack

KARACHI: One person was killed and five others were injured on Thursday when unidentified men hurled a grenade in Kharadar area, ARY News reported. 

The incident occurred in the Cochinwala cloth market, and is said to carried out by extortionists. Police and Rangers reached the site of the incident while the injured have shifted to Civil Hospital.

Many traders protested against the attack and said that the presidents of all markets in the Old City area pay extortion amounts. They said the grenade attack occurred when the president of the Cochinwala market refused to pay extortion.

They said that every shopkeeper in the area pays a daily extortion of fifty to hundred rupees, while the Old City area witnesses business activity worth billions of rupees every day.

The identity of the dead aged around fifty has not yet been ascertained.

Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal took notice of the incident and asked for a detailed inquiry report from the deputy inspector general (DIG) South.
