Karachi Kings on top of PSL points table with 27-run victory over Qalandars

DUBAI: All-rounder Shahid Afridi and Ravi Bopara’s stellar performances guided Pakistan to clinch third consecutive victory in Pakistan Super League (PSL) season three at Dubai stadium on Monday.

Apart from Bopara’s imposing 50 off 34, Joe Denly (28) and Colin Ingram (28) played the key role in driving Karachi Kings to a modest total of 159-7.

KK were going well until they lost three wickets in quick succession after early onslaught. Then, Bopara and Imad Wasim took the responsibility with swift march.

Shahid Afridi got only two balls to play — one was sent out of the boundary for six and the other sent him packing back to the pavilion.

Besides Afridi’s three wickets it was Joe Denly’s two outstanding catches that derailed Lahore Qalanadars in the chase of 160-run target as they slumped to their third defeat in as many games.

Denly pulled off stunning catches, the first off Sohail Akhtar at mid-off and then a beautiful catch at point off Denesh Ramdin’s forecful cut to lead Karachi Kings fightback after Brendon McCullum’s 30-ball 44 had laid the foundation.

McCullum smashed two sixes and five boundaries before he was struck leg before wicket by Imad Wasim in the eightth over with the total at 72.

Afridi then dismissed Fakhar Zaman (19), Umar Akmal (six) and Sohail (nine) to give Karachi a sniff of victory.

Usman Shinwari also chipped in with 3 for 26.

This victory has put Kings on top of the PSL table.

The league will shift to Sharjah on Wednesday after a day’s rest.

Earlier, Karachi Kings won the toss and opted to bat first against Lahore Qalandars.

Usman Khan Shenwari replaced the injured fast bowler Mohammad Amir in Karachi Kings’ ranks. While in Qalandars squad, Agha Salman came in for Aamer Yamin.
