Prepaid Electricity Meters to be Introduced in Pakistan

The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has decided to introduce prepaid power meters to consumers, allowing them to pay for usage in advance.

Speaking to ARY News, LESCO Chief Engineer Muhammad Ramzan Butt has said that the system would function in a similar way to mobile phone credit.

“Consumers will load balance into their meters, and electricity will be supplied according to the available credit,” he explained.

He added that users would have control over how quickly they consume electricity, choosing to limit usage during peak hours, use the balance in six days or extend their balance up to a month.

The LESCO Chief Engineer said that the initiative is currently being tested on a trial basis, with two prepaid meters installed in Allama Iqbal Town as part of a pilot project.

Muhammad Ramzan Butt further said that the move is also aimed at addressing complaints related to overbilling.

The LESCO official added that some additional services are being outsourced to ensure consumers face fewer difficulties in accessing support and services.
