LAHORE: A constitutional petition calling for ban on the broadcast of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s speeches and statements on news channels was filed in the Lahore High Court on Wednesday, ARY News reported.
Advocate Azhar Siddiqui petitioned the high court, submitting that Nawaz Sharif was inciting public against the Supreme Court in his speeches. He expressed apprehension that Sharif’s statement might trigger anarchy in the country.
Instead of accepting the Supreme Court verdict that disqualified him, Sharif was consistently criticizing the judges of the court, the petitioner submitted added that the PML-N leader was spearheading a baseless propaganda against the judiciary, which is flagrant violation of the concerned laws.
He complained that Pemra has failed to take any action to stop the broadcast of
Sharif’s ‘contemptuous’ remarks on news channels. Thus, he requested the court to restrain news channels from airing his speeches and statements and direct Pemra to take action against channels airing his statements.
While addressing the participants of his homecoming rally en route to Lahore on the historic GT Road, Nawaz Sharif for the umpteenth time took aim at the judges who had given the disqualification verdict in the Panamagate case. He said, “I was voted in prime minister by 200 million people while five honorable judges sent me packing.”
He told the participants, “the Supreme Court’s verdict was an insult to their vote. It had lowered Pakistan’s standing in the international community.”
