Mahira Khan won’t star in fairness cream commercials

Mahira Khan is considered as one of the most versatile and prominent actresses of Pakistan in recent times. The Pakistani actress is considered a strikingly beautiful woman and in general, refrains from issuing bold or controversial statements. However, recently the actress spoke about the ‘fairness complex’ that is prevalent in Pakistan and said that she did not understand why people were obsessed with being fair.

According to a local report, in an interview with BBC Urdu, Mahira Khan said that she would not endorse beauty creams because she felt that the nation needed to break free from the cycle of obsession with being fair. Mahira also said that she didn’t judge people who opted for fairness creams or endorsed them but refused to propagate that concept herself via advertisements.
“I don’t judge people who use or endorse fairness creams but it is dangerous when this whole concept gives you a complex. Which, I know for a fact, it does because when women talk [about girls] in our society, they ask ‘gori hay

’? what sort of a question is that?”

“I don’t know if we have a complex of being fair or whether we are just fond of fair complexion,” she added. The Ho Mann Jahaan actress also put her foot down and said that she had decided not to do any commercial of a fairness cream since media was a powerful outlet and the messages that were conveyed had a powerful impact.

“We have a very powerful entertainment industry, we are the media. We are watched everyday in every household. If we don’t break this concept, we will drive it in more. I have strictly decided not to do a commercial that has anything to do with fairness creams.”

Kudos to Mahira Khan for standing up for her beliefs and taking a bold step forward. Her latest film Ho Mann Jahaan is in theatres and doing a splendid job.
