FAISALABAD: A man was handed over to police after he allegedly tried to throw a shoe at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan after the party’s rally in Faisalabad on Sunday.
The incident occurred when Khan was getting into his car after attending the public gathering. The attempted shoe attack was foiled by PTI activists when they collared the attacker in time and he was later beaten up by people before being sent into police custody.
According to ‘confessional’ video shared by the PTI’s official Twitter account, the man, identified as Mirza Ramzan said he was sent by the son-in-law of Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, Sheharyar to hurl a shoe at Khan.
Police also corroborated the PTI version that suspect admitted that Sanaullah’s son-in-law directed him to throw a shoe at the PTI chief. Police said they would take further action only after a written application by the PTI.
Earlier on Sunday, a man threw a shoe at former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at Jamia Naeemia in Lahore during a ceremony. Following the bizarre episode, the ex-PM cut short his speech and left the venue under his security guards.
