Man shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ shot by Spanish police

MADRID: Police have shot a man who was shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ at the Spanish French border after he reportedly sparked a terror alert.

According to reports, armed officers opened fire when the man began screaming in Arabic when the car he was travelling in was stopped at a motorway toll near La Jonquera.

Police had reportedly become concerned after they apparently spotted a ‘suspicious object’ on his waist after searching the female driver, according to reports. Officers surrounded his car, which also had another passenger, after he got back in and continued to shout at them.

They are said to have shot

him twice in the leg when he got back out with the unidentified object in his hand. The bizarre incident continued when the injured man returned to the car throwing his clothes out of the window, according to reports.

The suspect has since had an operation at the Doctor Josep Trueta University Hospital, Girona, and did not suffer life threatening injuries. The incident is not being linked to terror, according to Metro.

The sources added officers thought the man may have been on drugs at the time. An investigation is underway and the unidentified man will be interviewed once his condition gets stable.
