Medicine prices in Pakistan less than Bangladesh, India: PPMA

KARACHI: The Pakistan Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers’ Association (PPMA) on Monday said prices of medicines in Pakistan were less than Bangladesh and India, ARY News reported.

Representatives of the PPMA said this in a press conference.

On this occasion, Chairman PPMA Zahid Saeed said multinational pharmaceutical companies were leaving Pakistan. “Pakistan will have to make a comprehensive policy lest the companies move elsewhere,” he said.

He said the companies had asked the federation and the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to formulate a comprehensive policy.

The PPMA chairman said the DRAP and other responsible did not do their homework.

“Prices on several of the medicines have also been reduced by 60 percent,” Zahid Saeed said adding that only 20-25 medicines were being talked about on social media.

On April 7, Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Aamer Mehmood Kiani had said that the government was committed to control the illegal price hike of medicines.

Addressing a press conference, Aamer Mehmood Kiani had warned of strict action against the pharmaceutical companies who were violating the rules.

Drugs price was increased from 15 to 19 percent because of dollar rise, the minister had said and added that the drug policy was approved by the previous government on the directive of the Supreme Court.
