Two MQM workers convicted in murder of police officer

KARACHI: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday convicted two Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers in killing case of a police officer and his security guard in Karachi, ARY News reported.

The accused Abu Irfan and another accused were arrested during a raid at the MQM headquarters Nine Zero (90).

Police said the convicts had shot dead Deputy Superintendent Police Nawaz Ranjha and his driver Jahangir Hussain in 2012.

The court has given MQM worker Ishtiaq alias Police Wala life sentence, while Abu Irfan has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

The court has acquitted four others suspected to be partner in crime of the accused. Those who have been acquitted include Shafiq alias Shafiq ur Rehman, Zakir Hussain, Khawaja Faisal Shakir Shah and others.

The ATC has issued arrest warrants for four fugitives of the MQM. The fugitives include Danish, Noman alias Nomi, Murtaza and Rasheed.

Advocate Lateef Pasha was pursuing the case for those who have been acquitted.

On April 2, MQM worker Zubair Charya was present at Baldia factory when it was being set on fire, a key eyewitness in the inferno case had testified before an anti-terrorism court.

The eyewitness, who had gone into hiding fearing for life, had appeared in the ATC and recorded his statement.

He had picked out Zubair as one of the accused persons, who were present inside the factory at the time when it was being put on fire.
