Mushtaq Maher reinstated as Karachi police chief

KARACHI: The provincial government of Sindh has reinstated Mushtaq Maher as the city police chief after having replaced him with Ghulam Qadir Thebo for over a month, ARY News reported.

The government had reshuffled the top brass of the police department on July 17 after appointing Thebo as Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi and making Maher as AIG Traffic.

The provincial government issued a notification on Thursday, stating Maher – who is presently serving as the Additional IG Traffic – would be reinstated as the city police chief.

In his place, the government had posted Thebo.

The government was reportedly unsatisfied with the performance of Thebo as there were a number of high-profile incidents of crime and terrorism in this duration.

The decision has reportedly been taken on a mutual understanding between the Sindh IG and home department as the crime rate of the metropolis had come down substantially during Maher’s earlier tenure as the city’s police chief.

Earlier on July 17, the Sindh home minister termed it a routine reshuffle. “The Inspector General (IG) has no authority to appoint Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) and additional IGs. These are administrative changes purely on merit,” he had said.
