Nation observes 50th Defence Day, pays tribute to 1965 heroes

It was on this day in 1965 that the Indian forces crossed international border in the darkness of night to attack Pakistan but ever vigilant armed forces, solidly backed by the nation, foiled designs of the enemy.

The day dawned with 31 gun salute in the Federal Capital and 21 gun salute in provincial capitals.

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif laid floral wreath at Iqbal’s mausoleum and prayed for the well-being of the country.

After Fajr prayers, special prayers were offered for the progress and prosperity of the nation.

Sirens would be sounded at 9:29 in the morning to herald a nation-wide one-minute silence to pay tributes to martyrs of Pakistan.

This will be followed by airing of national anthem by all radio and television networks at 9:30 a.m.

Pakistan Air Force will present a special aerobatics display over F-9 Park in Islamabad.

The display, which will begin at 11am will be participated by fighting aircraft of PAF including JF-17 Thunder, F-16 and Mirage.

Numerous functions would be held across the country to pay tributes to martyrs and highlight different aspects of the war and the way the nation defeated designs of the enemy.

Main function of the day will be held at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi to pay tributes to martyrs of Pakistan.

Defence Day of Pakistan is also being celebrated in Gilgit Baltistan with traditional zeal and fervor. In Gilgit, main function will be held at Corps Headquarters Force Command Northern Areas.

The 50th Defence Day of Pakistan is also being celebrated in Azad Jammu and Kashmir today with full enthusiasm and fervor. In Muzaffarabad, the main function to pay homage to martyrs is being held at Neelum Stadium.
