MET office forecasts no heat wave in Karachi

KARACHI: Residents of Karachi can breath sigh of relief as no heat wave is expected in the foreseeable future despite the dry and dusty weather prevalent in the city.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, a westerly wave is affecting upper parts of the country and likely to persist till Friday. This has reduced temperatures in various part of the country.

Rain and dust thunderstorm with gusty winds and isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorm occurred in Islamabad, upper Punjab including Lahore, and parts of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan.

Many isolated places in Bhawalpur, Multan and D.G. Khan division witnessed rainfall on Thursday. Rainfall is expected on Friday in Peshawar, Malakand, Kohat and Hazara divisions, and also in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Sargodha divisions of Punjab.

However, dry  and dusty weather is expected elsewhere in the country including Karachi. This is not worrisome as the temperature is forecast to decrease in the coming days due to the westerly wave.

Despite this arrangements have been made for the heat wave as emergency camps have been set up in various parts of the city, while water bottles and precautionary measures are been provided to citizens.

Karachi witnessed an unprecedented heat wave in June 2015 in which hundreds of people lost their lives due to heatstroke.
