LAHORE: Prayers for late former first lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz will be held today at Jati Umra,
According to deceased’s brother-in-law Shehbaz Sharif, who is the president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), only relatives will join the prayers for Kulsoom Nawaz.
Earlier, Shehbaz requested his party’s sympathizers and the public to pray and arrange Quran Khwani for Kulsoom Nawaz in their respective areas, while clarifying that only Sharif’s family members will attend the prayers that are arranged at Jati Umra.
Begum Kulsoom Nawaz – wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif – was laid to rest near the graves of her father-in-law, Mian Sharif and brother-in-law Abbas Sharif in Lahore on Friday.
The Punjab government extended the period of parole granted to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar till Monday to attend the funeral prayers of late Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.
Renowned Islamic scholar Tariq Jameel offered the funeral prayers in Sharif Medical City adjacent to the Sharif family’s residence in Jati Umrah, Raiwind. The former first lady passed away on September 11 in London after a prolonged illness.
The political career of the former first lady remains far from any controversy, unlike embroilment of her family members in different cases.
Born into a Kashmiri family in Lahore, she attended Islamia College and Foreman Christian College University for her graduation. Kulsoom was married to Nawaz Sharif, with whom she has four children. Kulsoom Nawaz served as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) from 1999 to 2002.
