People’s Party’s Aitzaz Ahsan, PTI’s Hamid Khan, Afrasiyab Khattak of ANP, Shaikh Rashid Ahmed and other opposition leaders are attending a meeting in Islamabad to decide joint proposals on behalf of the parliamentary opposition.
The government had written a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan for constitution of a judicial commission on priority basis to probe the Panama leaks controversy.
The terms of reference of the letter state that the commission will investigate former and current holders of public office. The terms also stated that all provincial and federal institutions will be bound to cooperate with the commission. It is also stated that the commission would receive documents on affidavits.
The opposition parties rejected the the terms of reference and demanded consultation with the opposition parties over the issue. PTI chairman Imran Khan rejected the terms of reference of the judicial commission and said that the government should decide the terms based on consultations with opposition.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Khursheed Shah said that the solution did not lay in the formation of a judicial commission. Shah called for a forensic audit to determine the truth.
PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called for resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He said PM Nawaz should step down in the same manner that he had demanded for the PPP Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani to resign.
The opposition parties are demanding the prime minister to step down before the probe inquire into the involvement of his family in Panama Papers scandal.
