Pakistan opposes creation of more Security Council permanent seats

NEW YORK: Pakistan has opposed the creation of new permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

According to Radio Pakistan, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi stated that the creation of permanent seats in UNSC opposes the principles of the UN Charter.

Pakistan’s permanent representative, on the other hand, stated that the country supports the increase in non-permanent seats in the UNSC as it will make the UN body more accountable, democratic and effective.

In June, Pakistan had stated that new permanent seats in UNSC will not make the UN body more representative.

The country had questioned how adding new permanent seats to the 15-member body could enhance its efficiency and effectiveness.

Lodhi had said that adding new permanent members would, in fact, have the opposite effect.
