ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday approved the reconstitution of 13-member National Economic Council (NEC) — a constitutional body responsible for reviewing the country’s overall economic condition.
The president approved the reconstitution of the National Economic Council on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to the notification issued here, two new members from Punjab and Sindh were included in NEC. The members include caretaker Punjab minister for Trade and Commerce S.M Tanveer and KP finance advisor Himayatullah Khan.
The development comes after caretaker setups were announced in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the dissolution of assemblies in the respective provinces.
What is NEC?
According to the Constitution, the NEC meetings shall be summoned by the chairman or on a requisition made by one-half of the members of the council.
The NEC is required to meet at least twice a year and the quorum for a meeting of the council shall be one-half of its total membership.
