Resolutions moved in Punjab, Sindh assemblies over Nawaz’s remarks

KARACHI: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Monday submitted resolutions to the Punjab and Sindh assemblies, demanding institution of a high treason case against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif over his controversial statement about the 2008 Mumbai attacks.  

PTI lawmaker Dr Murad Rass moved the resolution in the Punjab assembly, stating that the former premier’s statement has left little doubt that he was trying to please India.

Sharif is undermining national prestige by issuing such statements, it contended.

The resolution demands registration of a high treason case against the PML-N Quaid and that he should be barred from issuing public statements.

PTI MPA Khurram Sher Zaman submitted a similar resolution to the Sindh assembly secretariat, condemning the controversial statement. It decries his statement as high treason and demands registration of a case against him.

The PML-N supreme leader’s statement about the November 2008 Mumbai attacks in an interview to a local newspaper has triggered a storm of criticism from people of all social strata, especially politicos.

“Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?” these are the remarks uttered by Mr. Sharif that sparked the countrywide controversy.
