‘Raisani, facing Rs 40bn corruption charges, evades imprisonment after plea bargain’

LAHORE: DG Operations National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Zahir Shah says ex-bureaucrat Mushtaq Raisani, facing corruption charges of over Rs 40 billion, surrendered at least Rs 800 million worth assets after corruption inquiry against him.

Under plea bargain, he said, the accused face all legal charges except imprisonment.

Speaking at a press conference, Shah said Raisani also returned six plots in the DHA Karachi besides two vehicles to the NAB.

The National Accountability Bureau has accepted Rs two billion bargain deal of former finance secretary Balochistan Mushtaq Ahmed Raisani and his front man Sohail Majeed in Balochistan’s mega corruption scandal.

He said, so far Rs 3 billion had been recovered by the corruption watchdog.

The DG NAB said the ex-Balochistan bureaucrat also handed over to NAB his two properties worth Rs 60 million and Rs 70 million, in Quetta and Karachi respectively.

He also underlined that after plea bargain, the accused no more stand eligible for government service.

The former finance secretary Balochistan hit the headlines in May this year when NAB itself seized over Rs730 million hard cash from his house in Quetta hours after he was taken into custody.

NAB officials raided his house and recovered bundles of notes in local and foreign currency. The bundles of notes – from Pakistani rupee to US dollar – were stuffed in 14 large bags.

Moreover, prize bonds, a large quantity of gold and saving certificates were also recovered during the raid.
