Resting right next to the Arabian Sea, Karachi today longs for every drop of water. The megapolis is doomed to transform into a desert as the citizens are compelled to wait for long hours to receive water.
As the dam dried, tanker mafia in the city began to cash in on citizen’s misery. The sale of 3000-gallon tanker hiked to 5,500 from 3000, while it seems not to stop here.
The residents of posh areas are forced to pay even higher, whereas the owners of water tankers flatly decline to go to suburban areas leaving the inhabitants with yet another dilemma.
The Sindh government and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), as usual, are seen playing the role of silent spectators over the monopoly of tanker mafia. Meetings held, but no measures were taken on ground to save the city of over 20 million.
The citizens question who should they plead with to provide them this basic necessity. What adds insult to injury is that the citizens deprived of water are forced to pay monthly water bill.
