The Committee had a large gathering at its Karachi Metrological Department Office yesterday for the sighting of the moon. The meeting was well attended by clerics and Met Office officials.
After collecting evidences from zonal committees of Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Multan and other parts of the country, Committee’s Chairman Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman made the announcement of the moon-sighting during a press conference.
While speaking to media, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman also showed his gratitude to Mufti Popalzai of Masjid Qasim Ali Khan in Peshawar for his support and efforts due to which Ramazan has begun on the same day across the country.
Pakistan had been struggling to evolve a consensus between the two noted moon-sighting committees on observing the holy month and Eid-ul-Fitr on the same day across the country for many years.
Last year, Mufti Popalzai and Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman had issues over the sighting of the Ramazan moon and Eid-ul-Fitr. Mufti Popalzai announced to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on July 17. However, after meeting in Islamabad the next day of his announcement, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman announced Eid-ul-Fitr across Pakistan on July 18.
