Sport biopics seem to be the flavour of the season as several films have been made on players such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Milkha Singh, Mary Kom and various others.
Furthermore, Shraddha Kapoor will be seen playing badminton player Saina Nehwal while Harshvardhan Kapoor is gearing for the role of retired professional shooter Abhinav Bindra.
Another biopic may be in the offing on Indian ace tennis player Sania Mirza. The former world No. 1 in doubles has won six Grand Slam titles, is also a well-known figure in Pakistan due to her marriage with cricketer Shoaib Malik.
According to the Mumbai Mirror, renowned producer Ronnie Screwvala will make the film and has already purchased the rights for the film.
“Many wanted to make a film on Sania’s life for a while now and Ronnie has finally bagged the rights for it. The story will be a balance of her professional and personal life with the latter getting more prominence. The makers will zero down on a director soon, after which they will begin the casting process,” a source told the Indian daily.
Mirza was born in Mumbai and soon afterwards her parents Imran and Naseema Mirza moved to Hyderabad. She began playing tennis at age six, becoming a professional in 2003.
She won the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls’ Doubles title, partnering with Alisa Kleybanova, and paired with Sanaa Bhambri at the 2003 Junior French Open.
Mirza started to show early success on the senior circuit as she made her debut in April 2001 on the ITF circuit aged 15. She has received several prestigious awards such as Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the Arjuna Awards.
She married cricketer Shoaib Malik in Hyderabad on April 12, 2010. The couple are expecting their first child this year. She has also made several appearances on TV shows.
