KP police directed to ward off interference in Mashal lynching probe

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court on Thursday urged Khyber Pakthunkhwa police to ward off any possible intervention in Mashal Khan lynching case and probe it without excessive delay, ARY News reported.

The apex court was hearing the case when police apprised the three-member bench that 36 suspects have been detained so far for their suspected connection with the coldblooded murder of 23-year-old Journalism student at Abdul Wali Khan University (AWKUM) in Mardan. However, the main accused who opened fire at the victim could not be arrested, police lamented.

Submitting a report on the progress made by the police, the government counsel said that the arrested accused included nine university employees while a three-member team has been constituted to expedite and assist in the investigation of the lynching case.

The government lawyer also told the bench that the investigation team would also comprise officials of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Military Intelligence (MI) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Main Suspect on Run

The lawyer informed the court that the identification of the main suspect has been established who fired at Mashal Khan, which claimed his life, but his arrest could not be made so far while six other suspects have recorded their confessional statements before a magistrate.

The bench after hearing the arguments and considering the progress made by the police in the investigation urged to expedite the investigation and adjourned the hearing for 15 days.
