KARACHI: The Sindh government announced on Thursday that all schools, colleges and universities will remain closed on May 1 (Monday) on account of Labour Day.
A notification in this regard was also issued by the education department.
“The Government of Sindh declares Monday 1 May 2023, as a Public Holiday on the occasion of “Labour Day” throughout the Province of Sindh,” the notification read.
For decades, Labour Day is observed all over the world on May 1 in memory of the Chicago workers who were killed by police while striking for an eight-hour workday in 1886.
According to International Labour Organization, the day is observed as a World Day for safety and health at work to commemorate the services and sacrifices of workers across the world and encourage them to be aware of their rights.
Pakistan’s first labour policy was devised in 1972, in which May 1 was declared an official holiday.
