Senate body to take up Panama Papers bill on Oct 13

ISLAMABAD: A Senate committee is expected to take up a bill on Thursday seeking formation of judicial commission to probe Panama Papers scandal.

According to reports, the bill titled “Panama Papers Inquiries Act 2016” will be taken up Senate’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice headed by Javed Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslim League-N.

The Pakistan People’s Party-led opposition had introduced the bill in the upper house on Sept 26. At the time when bill was introduced, at least 32 members voted in its favour and 19 against it.

Two political parties including Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Balochistan National Party (Mengal) refrained from backing the bill.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on April 5 had announced the formation of a commission to investigate allegations made in Panama Papers that linked his family to a series of offshore companies.

Three of Sharif’s four children are named in the Panama Papers — daughter Maryam, who has been tipped to be his political successor, and sons Hasan and Hussain — with the records showing they owned London real estate through offshore companies administered by Mossack Fonseca.

The leaked papers, comprising 11.5 million documents from Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, exposes how some of the world’s most powerful people have secreted their money offshore, and also implicated Sharif’s sons Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz.
