PM launches new wheat policy to raise farmer income, safeguard food supply

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has approved the National Wheat Policy 2025–26, aimed at ensuring fair prices for farmers, maintaining stable reserves, and safeguarding national food security. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, ARY News reported.

According to reports, the meeting was attended by the chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan, along with representatives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and other relevant stakeholders.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that Pakistan is an agricultural country and wheat remains a crop of vital national importance. He said wheat is the primary source of income for farmers, and the government is fully aware of the challenges they face.

“The government is making every possible effort for the welfare and prosperity of farmers. They are the backbone of Pakistan’s economy,” the prime minister said.

He added that the new Wheat Policy 2025–26, was formulated after comprehensive consultations with all stakeholders, including provincial governments, farmer organizations, industrial representatives, and the agricultural community.

“The National Wheat Policy 2025–26 is being announced based on consensus,” Prime Minister Sharif stated. “Its goal is to protect public interest while ensuring fair profits for farmers.”

He also directed authorities to build strategic wheat stocks to guarantee price stability and supply security, ensuring the protection of both producers and consumers.

The prime minister lauded the provinces for their cooperation in developing the policy and expressed confidence that it would boost agricultural growth, increase farmers’ income, and strengthen national food security.

“Insha’Allah, this policy will promote agricultural progress and secure Pakistan’s food future,” Shehbaz Sharif concluded.

Earlier, the Sindh government had demanded announcement of wheat’s support price from the federal government, recommending Rs4200 as per the Maund price of the grain.

Sindh’s Agriculture Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar has said that under the IMF conditions, provinces could not fix the price without instructions from the federal government. “Farmers facing financial pressures owing to delay in fixing support price of wheat,” provincial minister said.
