Sindh Govt extends Rangers powers in Karachi

KARACHI: Sindh Government has signed a summary of extension in special powers to paramilitary Rangers in Karachi on Thursday, ARY News reported.

Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah signed the summary for extending special police powers to Rangers for 90 days in Karachi today. The summary will be forwarded to the federal government for approval.

It should be noted that the three-month period of policing powers granted to Pakistan Rangers had been expired on 16th January.

Opposition parties in Sindh Assembly had criticized ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) over not extending special powers to Rangers in the province.

The government had initiated the Rangers led targeted operation in Karachi and September, 2013, to curb terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, extortion, targeted killings and other heinous crimes in the port city after a wave of criminal incidents in the metropolis.

The operation contained criminal activities in the city to a great extent creating semblance of peace in the city

Several political parties, however, complained that their workers being targeted in the law enforcement operation in Karachi.
