Sindh govt imposes police reform law, governor opposes

KARACHI: Sindh government on Wednesday imposed Police Order- 2002 amendment bill, granting all the powers of transfer and posting in police department to the provincial chief minister, ARY News reported.

Sources said that the provincial government imposed the amendment bill via a notification under Article-116 after the Sindh Governor Imran Ismail again rejected the bill.

Under the new law, the provincial government would form a district public safety commission, comprising members of local government, legislators and civil sociality.

The sources said that now transfer and posting in Sindh police would be made in consultation with the chief minister and the IG police.

Earlier on May 30, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail had rejected Police Reforms Act after raising a number of objection over its amendments.

According to sources, the Sindh governor had stated in his objection to the provincial government, “It cannot be called a bill due to the series of amendments [in laws]. The provincial government has eliminated 80 Section out of 190 in the Reforms’ Act.”

The governor had suggested the provincial government to prefer formulating a new bill instead of amending the older regulations.
