According to details, Pakistan Peoples Party MPA Erum Khalid and Muttahida Quami Movement’s Heer Soho tabled two resolutions in the assembly to pay tribute to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for winning her second Oscar for the movie A Girl In The River: The Price Of FOrgiveness. Both resolutions were signed by members of the assembly from both aisles. Members of the assembly felicitated Sharmeen for her second Oscar win and acknowledged her for elevating Pakistan’s image worldwide.
The tabled resolution read: The House congratulates Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on winning another Oscar award for “A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness”. Once again Sharmeen has made Pakistan very proud. This documentary sends a very strong message against the menace of honour killing because there is no honour in honour killing.”
When put to a vote by Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, the resolution was passed unanimously by the House. Several leaders from various political parties spoke on the resolution and paid tribute to Sharmeen. They hoped that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would uphold the word he had given to Chinoy and make the necessary amendments to the law regarding honour killings. They also acknowledged Sharmeen’s work as a necessary step in eradication of the social evil that subjugates women.
The lawmakers further stated that Sharmeen’s win had further raised Pakistan’s image abroad by condemning a practice which was against the principles of Islam nor Pakistan.
