An incredible photography project celebrates all the varied places where Muslims pray. It’s called ‘Places You’ll Pray’ and share beautiful pictures on Instagram.
The project is coordinated by Sana ullah, a first-generation Bangladeshi raised in Florida. Sana said that she was inspired when her family had to pray in a dressing room mall during prayer time.
Sana began photoseries in which she asks contributors to take her to a place they remember praying, and then photographs them there. She also asks them to share their memories of prayer in that location.
The aim is to challenge the notion that prayer only occurs in mosques or the home, as these pictures show Muslims complete their five daily prayers in fields, basketball courts and even Machu Picchu.
“(The) majority of Muslims are not the evil that hurts this world and its people on it, but rather Muslims (are) constantly taught to love it sincerely and find peace with themselves five times a day,” she said.
The collection of simple, yet vibrant images of young American Muslims praying in public spaces outside of a mosque.
Each image is paired with a quote by the subject speaking on a specific memory pertaining to prayer, or the individual’s personal thoughts on the significance of prayer.
While some images are preconceived, others are spontaneous moments. The intention is to open a floor of open-minded and educated conversations about identity, religion, stereotypes and spirituality.”
