“Sultan of Swing” Wasim Akram is celebrating his 48th birthday today.
Wasim Akram is one of Pakistan’s most celebrated cricketers. The left hand all-rounder does not need any introduction in cricket.
Akram is regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time. He is considered to be the pioneers of reverse swing bowling and to be the only bowler who could swing the ball both ways.
He was born on June 3rd, 1966 in Lahore. He made his debut against New Zealand in 1985 and soon caught the attention of the world. He was also the most successful bowler in the 90s. Akram’s notable contributions with the bat and the ball helped Pakistan clinch their only 50 wicket World Cup in 1992 at Australia and New Zealand.
Akram has taken over nine hundred wickets in cricket. He has 414 wickets in 104 tests and 502 ODI wickets. He became the first bowler in cricketing history to bag 500 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODI).
He was known for his terrifying swinging yorkers.
The cricketing legend has also been known for his batting performances as well. He has scored 2898 runs in 104 test matches with highest score of 257 runs not out. Akram made 3717 runs while playing in 356 ODIs.
The left handed all rounder represented Pakistan in 104 test matches and 356 ODIs.
He bid farewell to cricket in 2003 and started commentating and coaching in cricket. He was included in the prestigious ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.
Cricketing experts have said that players like Wasim Akram are rarely seen in the sport.
The left handed cricketer was a bowler who could spread fear in the opponents with his capability to bowl at immense pace and swinging the ball both ways. He was a batsmen who could smash bowlers to all the corners of the ground.
