LOS ANGELES: "The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" dominated in its first week in theaters, edging true-crime thriller "Black Mass" to lead the North American box office, according to industry figures released Monday.
Sony's faith-based drama "War Room" has the edge on N.W.A biopic "Straight Outta Compton" with $9.3 million to lead the modest U.S. box office over the Friday-Sunday weekend.
"Straight Outta Compton" may take place more than two decades ago, but its themes of racial tension, poverty, and police brutality still speak to moviegoers living in a post-Ferguson world.
