Tarbela 4th Extension: WAPDA conducts load rejection test of entire units

LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has effectively carried out instantaneous load rejection test of entire three units of Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project.

According to sources, it is observed that the test was carried out at the load of almost 1,100MW. This simultaneous load rejection test was intended to examine the steadiness of under-water parts and increase in speed and pressure of the turbines. The test is the basic requirement and shall be conducted once a hydropower project is finished and its entire generating units are wholly operational.

Furthermore, the turbine efficiency test was also conducted previous week under the administration of an international expert. However, the test determined that the turbine efficiency was supplementary than it was predicted during the model testing.

The conclusion of various projects including, Tarbela 4th Extension and Neelum-Jhelum hydropower projects within this year has put forth optimistic impact on the whole hydel generation, as it elevated to 5,241MW during the peak hours on Friday recording an augmentation of almost 46% as compared to 3,581MW produced on the same day preceding year.

It needs to be mentioned here that, since the commissioning of Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project, it has contributed almost 1.26 billion units of low-cost hydel electricity to the national grid regardless of low water flow in this year.
