KARACHI: Extortionists on Thursday shot and injured brother of a trader in Karachi as the trader avoided to pay the extortion money.
According to the details, Muhammad Tufail, a Karachi trader, had received a call via WhatsApp from abroad seeking extortion money. Later, the culprits opened fire which resultantly injured his brother, Kashif, as the trader evaded to respond to the call.
The trader said that Zahid alias Ladla, a Lyari gangster, threatened him of serious consequences if he failed to pay Rs 5 million. Since he was not receiving his call, the extortionists shot and injured his brother, the trader added.
Muhammad Tufail said that after he brought his brother to the hospital, the extortionist once again phoned him and asked “to cooperate”.
It is pertinent to mention here that the extortion call and firing incident has spread panic among business community in the metropolis.

Whereas, police said that they have registered a case against the extortionists and launched investigation into the incident. The officials said that the bullet cases have been sent for forensic test.
According to reports, more than 100 people in the city had been threatened over the last five years for extortion money on calls were made from numbers registered in foreign parts of the world, including Europe, South Africa and Thailand.
According to police, extortionists in other countries have agents in Karachi who help them collect extortion money from their targets.
Out of 108 people who have so far been blackmailed for money, 31 are doctors and 68 traders, reports stated.
The Counter-Terrorism Department officials had said that 36 of the victims received calls from South Africa, 24 from Afghanistan and other calls were made from numbers registered in different European countries and Dubai.
