Ana de Armas said she was initially reluctant to work in ‘Knives Out as the makers wanted her to play a “Latina: and a “caretaker” in the film, which was then called a “secret project”.

The ‘Blonde‘ star said she was unimpressed with the offer due to the negative connotations associated with the two words.

“I was like, I do not have the energy, what is this?” she said. “I said, you either tell me why this is worth it or I can’t. I passed on it twice because of that description.”

Moreover, she said playing the character with the two traits would not make a difference to Hollywood’s norm of “Latina” characters being given less screen time.

“For a Latina in a setup like this, with a wealthy family and this cast, all I thought was, ‘What am I going to do here?’ I’ll probably be standing in a corner, not having much to say,” she said.

The actor realized that she could change the perception of “Latina” characters in the Hollywood industry by giving her ‘Knives Out‘ character more depth and complexity after reading its script.
