Pakistan suffered a historic defeat against Afghanistan in the tournament as they lost the game by eight wickets. It was the first time that Green Shirts have lost to the Atlans in the 50-over format.
Babar Azam-led Green Shirts scored 282-7 thanks to captain Babar Azam (74) and opening batter Abdullah Shafique’s (52) half-centuries. Vice Captain Shadab Khan and batting all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed chipped in with handy knocks of 40 each.
Afghanistan completed the run chase in 49 overs thanks to fifties by Ibrahim Zadran (87), Rahmat Shah (77) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65).
Wasim Akram shared his views on the side’s performance in the A-Sports show ‘The Pavilion’. He said the defeat was “embarrassing” for Pakistan as Afghanistan managed to chase a big target of 280 at the loss of two wickets.
The former cricketer lashed out over the management not conducting fitness tests of the players for the past two years, adding that several players have been eating unhealthy dishes like unhealthy food.
The legendary pacer called for fitness criteria for the selection of players. He advocated then-coach Misbah-ul-Haq’s policy of requirements which worked despite players hating it.
Wasim Akram said Pakistan are not fielding well because of their fitness woes.
