Forget smartphone, WhatsApp brings you a whole new way to chat

The Facebook-owned firm has just announced that users can now download an official Windows and Mac app to their desktop PC or laptop.

The app mirrors the conversations and messages on your phone and is available to everyone with a computer running Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+.

With that many users, WhatsApp now has to cope with 42 billion messages and 250 million videos being sent every day of the week.

When it was taken over by Facebook in 2014 it had just 450 million.

Confirming the news on their blog WhatsApp said: “Today we’re introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere – whether on your phone or computer at home or work.”

Because the app runs natively on your desktop, users get support for desktop notifications and better keyboard shortcuts.

If you fancy giving it a try simply head to the WhatsApp website and download the app.

Then, open it on your PC and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone (look for WhatsApp Web menu under Settings).

WhatsApp already has a similar service with WhatsApp web which allows users to access their messages via a browser.

WhatsApp recently confirmed that it now has one billion active users making it the world’s most popular messaging app.
