PTI’s Sardar Tanveer Ilyas elected new AJK PM

MUZAFFARABAD: The ruling PTI’s Sardar Tanveer Ilyas was elected 13th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir unopposed amid the joint opposition’s boycott of the election for the coveted post, ARY News reported.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mahmood chaired the Legislative Assembly session to conduct the election for the new Leader of the House for the rest of the constitutional period, ending in June 2026. PTI’s Tanveer Ilyas received 33 votes.

The opposition parties in AJK Legislative Assembly, comprising PPP and PML-N have boycotted the election. PTI has 32 seats in AJK Assembly, PPP 12, Muslim League 7, JKPP and Muslim Conference have one seat each.

Prime Minister-elect Sardar Tanveer Ilyas is likely to take the oath of his office at 3pm today.

The seat fell vacant after Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi resigned from office following no-confidence motion submitted against him by his own ruling party.

Prior to his resignation, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi had terminated five members of his cabinet over misconduct and suspicious activities.

In a meeting with the PTI chief, Qayyum Niazi had informed Imran Khan about the facts and the alleged conspiracy being hatched against him in AJK.
